Metal Oz — Privacy Policy

What Metal Oz Does

Metal Oz is a Chrome browser extension that converts prices displayed on websites into their equivalent in troy ounces of gold or silver. It fetches live precious metal spot prices from a public API and uses them to calculate conversions locally in your browser.

Data We Collect

None. Metal Oz does not collect any personal information, browsing history, page content, or usage analytics. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no servers that receive data from your browser activity.

What the Extension Stores Locally

Metal Oz uses chrome.storage.local to store the following data on your device only:

• The current gold and silver spot prices (fetched from gold-api.com)
• The timestamp of the last price fetch
• Your selected metal preference (gold or silver)
• Whether the price conversion overlay is enabled or disabled

This data never leaves your device. It is not transmitted to any server controlled by Metal Oz or Gold Insights.

External API Requests

Metal Oz makes periodic requests to gold-api.com to fetch current gold and silver spot prices. These requests:

• Contain no personal data — only a standard HTTP request for the current price
• Are made every 30 minutes in the background
• Are governed by gold-api.com's own privacy policy
• Do not include your IP address in any way that is associated with your identity by us

Host Permissions (<all_urls>)

Metal Oz requests access to all URLs so that the price conversion overlay can function on any website you visit. This permission is used exclusively to:

• Read price text on the current page (processed locally in your browser)
• Inject the gold/silver equivalent display next to prices

Metal Oz does not read, store, transmit or process page content beyond identifying price patterns. No page content is ever sent off your device.

Permissions Explained

• storage — To save your preferences and cached prices locally on your device
• activeTab — To inject the price conversion overlay on the current tab when enabled
• scripting — To run the content script that identifies and annotates prices
• alarms — To refresh the gold/silver spot price every 30 minutes in the background
• <all_urls> — To allow price conversion on any website (no data is collected)

Third-Party Services

The only third-party service Metal Oz communicates with is gold-api.com, a free public precious metals price API. No advertising networks, analytics platforms, or data brokers are used.

Children's Privacy

Metal Oz does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

If this privacy policy changes materially, the updated policy will be published at this URL and the extension version number will be incremented.
